Pyin Oo Lwin
Pyin Oo Lwin was founded by the British in 1896 as Maymyo. It was designed as a place to escape the Mandalay heat and later served as the summer capital for the British colonial administration until Myanmar’s independence in 1948. There are numerous colonial mansions and Christian churches remaining today, as well as beautiful gardens. Today Pyin Oo Lwin is a popular weekend and hot-season getaway. Its international flair also attracts many foreign travelers. In addition, there is a military academy and base there. The city’s population is estimated at 250,000, a diverse mix of Indian, Eurasian, Chinese, Chin, Kachin, Karen, Shan and Burmese.
